Island Windjammers Cruise Schedule and Rates
The weather in the Caribbean is warm and balmy year-round. Winter months are busier, because folks are trying to escape the cold back home. Windjamming is, quite literally, like nothing else on Earth. By turns exhilarating, relaxing, surprising, and nurturing, it’s like no other vacation you’ve ever experienced. Your adventure begins in Kos, an island paradise located in the southeastern Aegean Sea. From here, you will island-hop to ports of call rich in history and culture.
DO I NEED LOCAL CURRENCY?
We require one-third of your payment at the time of your confirmed reservation, one-third between the reservation and balance date, and one-third 45 days before your departure date. Please plan early to reserve your special date, even if the season is already underway. Rates vary with the number of passengers, length of cruise, and time of year. We work with college alumni and other nonprofit groups to create fundraisers and unique travel opportunities. Even if you don’t have enough people to fill a boat, discounts are available for groups of ten or more. WE’LL PUT THE WONDERS OF THE MAINE COAST AT YOUR FINGER TIPS!
Each cruise serves a lobster bake either on a beach or in the galley of the boat. Some cruises offer different options for entertainment, crafts, photography, or stargazing. It’s important to know who you are sailing with and to feel comfortable with their credentials. Captains Justin and Jocelyn of the Riggin are married with many years of experience sailing and crewing on windjammers and private yachts.

Island Windjammers encourages passengers to use soft-sided luggage, preferably a duffel and really, that's all you need. Daytime is spent in T-shirts, shorts, swimsuits (bring two) and cover-ups. In the evening, passengers may shower and change into sundresses (women) or shorts and a clean T-shirt (men). Tennis or water shoes are recommended if you do the optional island tours that are offered in Dominica and Union Island (depending on itinerary), but sturdy sandals also work. And really, how hard is that, when the smaller Caribbean islands beckon?
Our week at sea on a small schooner was one of the most unique trips I’ve done. I'm here because I love New England, and I bet that's why you're here, too! You want to explore more of this amazing region, or want to explore it for the first time!
Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the dates of your trip. Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement is not met. Vegetarian and gluten free diets are available on board; just speak with your chef when you arrive. Vegan, kosher, and other more restrictive diets cannot be accommodated. Anyone with life-threatening food allergies should not sail, as there is always the possibility of cross-contamination in our small galleys. Swift is a very special vessel designed in 1935 by Murray Peterson, a masterful naval architect famous for his coaster designs.
This cruise can be a grand change of pace and certainly the highlight of a longer Maine vacation. A Lobster Feast is included in all three-day cruises. The Riggin was given the Environmental Leadership in Hospitality award by the State of Maine —the first and only windjammer to be given the honor. Many sustainable practices are in place for sailing. We were welcomed to select a mug for the trip, ours to wash and use for the journey.

We saw porpoises, eagles, osprey, and my personal favorite, seals. Our cruise took us past a half dozen or more lighthouses, which is definitely a highlight of traveling in Maine. I am happiest near water, over water or better still on a conveyance moving through water. When my brother Sandy and I were deemed old enough, mother took us to Europe by ship. By Heidi Sarna I had a chat with travel advisor Kevin Flink about travel insurance. I met Kevin on a recent UnCruise in Alaska, where we had the opportunity to discuss the pros and cons of travel insurance.
The minimum age to sail is 8, and you are likely to find a few children and teenagers onboard during the summer months. The 101-foot-long Diamant schooner is currently the only ship in the fledgling Island Windjammers fleet. Much smaller than the boats run by the original Windjammer line, the 32-year-old Diamant is a bit short on amenities. But, with its gleaming wood saloon and intimate outdoor dining area, it's big on atmosphere -- and is perfect for a company intending to build its reputation on tall-ship sailing, rather than "foo-foo" flash. Alaska Cruise Packing Tips By Heidi Sarna I’ve been to Alaska many times over the years, having done nearly a dozen cruises there, on big and small ships, but mostly on the small ones, my favorites.
We scraped our leftovers for composting after meals. Each passenger washed plates and utensils in dedicated buckets on deck. Paper plates were used during our beach lobster bake, but composting was implemented, stainless utensils were washed, and paper products recycled.
